Hiring people vs installing systems
When growth hurts, founders hire. That instinct is human — and often the most expensive way to buy software you still do not have.

The headcount tax
People amplify process. If process lives in Slack lore and spreadsheets, every new hire multiplies exception volume. You feel productive because someone is "on it." You are actually funding a human integration layer that does not compound.

What systems buy that people cannot
- One quantity available to sell across channels — without a 9 a.m. reconciliation ritual.
- Cash and margin visibility while you can still change ads, PO timing, or pricing.
- Repeatable exception paths so only true judgment calls hit the founder.
- AI that reclaims hours on support and ops — without another seat on the org chart.
A simple decision rule
- List the top five weekly exceptions that land on you.
- Mark which would disappear if inventory, orders, and books shared one truth.
- If three or more vanish with a spine, install systems first. Hire into capacity that remains.
